13+ Zero Proof Sips for Dry January (and Beyond)

Are you looking for a way to reset after all the fun festivities and overindulgence of the holiday season? If you’ve found yourself feeling “blah” from the endless pours of wine, eggnog, and holiday punch, Dry January might be just what you need. Dry January is simple: abstain from alcohol for 30 days to reset your body and mind.

Founded by the British Organization Alcohol Change UK in 2013, Dry January started off as one woman’s simple challenge to give up alcohol for the month of January to prepare for a half-marathon she was planning to run in February. What that challenge transformed into was a worldwide campaign that encouraged folks to take a month off alcohol to slow down, take a look at their relationship with alcohol, and improve their overall well-being.

Something to note, though, is that Dry January isn’t about what you give up, but rather what you’ll gain from taking a break from drinking to reset your habits. Another thing to keep in mind is that Dry January doesn’t have to be perfect. A glass of wine with dinner? Okay. A Friday happy hour beer? You earned it. No need to beat yourself up. And you can always start again tomorrow. The goal is to be mindful of your habits and try to learn something about yourself in the process!

Whatever your approach, the Co-op is a great place to do Dry January without going cold turkey. Between our long list of mocktail ingredients and alcohol-free beers, we’ve got what you need to enjoy an alcohol-free start to the new year. We’re highlighting our favorite mocktail ingredients (can you say local shrubs?), non-alcoholic beers (that aren’t O’Douls), and some delicious mocktail recipes to craft something delicious at home. Or if you just want kombucha, we’ve got that, too.

Mocktail Must-Haves

Shrub Farm Raw ACV Shrubs

Made from whole fruits and raw organic apple cider vinegar, Shrub Farm’s shrub preserves are the perfect flavorful addition to your new year’s mocktail. Shrub Farm only uses fruit grown on organic farms in Maui and the Cascade Foothills for their flavorful concoctions, and the final product is always non-GMO, gluten-free, vegetarian-friendly, and shelf-stable.

Located in Bellingham, Shrub Farm crafts its shrubs in micro-batches, ensuring the highest quality and freshest flavors. And making a mocktail with these shrubs couldn't be easier. Simply combine one part shrub with 10 parts sparkling water, top with a little garnish, and toast to yourself for trying new things!

Choose from Blueberry & Lemon, Raspberry & Citrus, Ginger & Apple, and Ginger & Hawaiian Chili shrub flavors to add all the cheer your need to your next mocktail.

Girl Meets Dirt Shrubs

Locally made on Orcas Island, Girl Meets Dirt specializes in fruit preserves, bitters, and shrubs, all made from perfectly-ripe heirloom fruit grown on their farm. Without going into too much detail, the Girl Meets Dirt founding story is pretty incredible as founder Audra traded in her convenient city life working on Wall Street to pursue farm life (and fruit preserving) on Orcas Island.

Girl Meets Dirt fruit-forward preservatives are sweet, deeply-flavored, and delicately spiced, all while being true labors of love. And the same is true of their shrubs! Choose from Island Plum, Lemon Lavender, and Ruby Spiced Apple shrub flavors, all made from fruits grown right here in the Pacific Northwest.

Forest Farmstead Woodcutter’s Bitters

Tucked away in the North Cascade Mountains in Rockport, Forest Farmstead is a 3rd generation family-owned farmstead business that raises animals, manages a small orchard and market garden, and crafts unique beverage bitters out of spruce and douglas fir needles. You just need a couple of drops of these bitters to add an aromatic, natural flavor to your mocktail.

Disclaimer: though the ABV of a couple of drops of bitters is very, very low, they still contain alcohol. A bottle of bitters generally contains 35–45% alcohol. Avoid using bitters if you want a completely alcoholic-free drink. You can learn more here.

Mocktail Mixers

Of course, you’ll need a base for all those shrubs and bitters to bring everything together into a delightful non-alcoholic drink. In our drink aisle, you’ll find a wide variety of seltzer, sparkling water, tonic water, and fruity Italian sodas that are all wonderful bases for zero-proof drinks.
