Recognizing Juneteenth: Black-Owned Brands to Support at the Co-op
June 19th is known as Juneteenth: a day for reflection, recognition, and celebration. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and has been a federal holiday for three years.
It is reported that on June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans were notified of their freedom by Union troops in Galveston, Texas—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated all over the United States, often accompanied by festive parades, community events, and of course, lots of good cookout food.
At the Co-op, we celebrate by highlighting the numerous black-owned brands you can find (and support) at the Co-op not just on Juneteenth, but every day.
