The Upper Skagit Library empowers the community by creating opportunities, fostering connections, and providing resources, while committing to the highest standards of librarianship. The library is committed to serving and inspiring its diverse community.
Funds from 5% Friday will support the Upper Skagit Library’s Freedge program, an extension of the Food Recovery Program. Concrete restaurants, corner stores, grocers, schools, and more can put their food waste to good use by feeding neighbors needing food assistance instead of composting or trashing leftovers and close-dated food items.
A core aspect of the freedge program is rescuing perfectly good, edible food that businesses might otherwise discard. Upon receiving these donations, they are promptly labeled with the date of receipt along with information about potential allergens, ensuring community members are well-informed. This allows a variety of choices to those in need, while respecting their freedom to select what they prefer. Since opening, donated items rarely last more than two days in the Freedge, highlighting the pressing need in the Upper Skagit community.
5% Friday funds will be used to purchase a larger fridge for the program, and a shelf to better organize shelf-stable food. Any additional funds will be used to purchase supplies to help maintain the freedge operation: cleaning products, etc.
