4% Friday Community Shopping Day: Sedro-Woolley Farm to School

  • Skagit Valley Food Co-op 202 South 1st Street Mount Vernon, WA, 98273 United States (map)

The mission of Sedro Woolley Farm to School is to grow healthier, more informed, and empowered eaters by integrating hands-on, food-based learning at all grade levels.

Funds received through 4% Friday will be used to further Farm to School education efforts in the Sedro Woolley School District (SWSD). Specifically, funds will be used to integrate garden-based composting systems into garden education programs at all four participating SWSD elementary schools.

Last year, Samish Elementary launched a student-managed worm bin program, in which sixth grade students collect and sort compost from school lunches to feed their worm bin, while also monitoring bin health and recording findings weekly. This program encourages student awareness of and engagement with food waste cycles in the cafeteria and garden.

How Will Your Shopping Trip Support Sedro-Woolley Farm to School?

4% Friday funds will be used to help launch and sustain worm bin composting programs and related education activities at three additional SWSD elementary schools: Central, Clear Lake, and Evergreen. Worm bin designs will likely vary between schools, but average construction costs should be approximately $200 per bin; ideally each school will start with two bins. The remaining funds will be used for additional implements such as compost thermometers and worms to get the bins started, and for staff time to develop lessons and provide student training.
