Mother's Day 2020: How To Celebrate Mom Wherever You Are
On a more typical Mother's Day, you may take the time to visit with mothers in your life and thank them for, well, being them. Mother's Day 2020 is a little different, but you can still celebrate from wherever you are, even if that means you'll be embracing a contact-free Mother's Day. If you live close to mom, you can arrange to leave her a gift on the porch. If she's further away, you can go with a mail-in gift. Or, if you're staying home together, there are a few at-home DIY gifts that she will love.
Read on for thoughtful ways you can show love to all the moms in your life during this unprecedented time.
Gifts For The Mom Who Lives Nearby
If mom lives close to you, you have the convenience of purchasing her a gift and leaving it on the front porch.
Flowers and Her Favorite Dessert
Or, if you want to keep it simple and thoughtful, a bouquet of local flowers and your mom's favorite dessert goes a long way. While we don't have all our regular desserts available, we still have lots of options if you want to pick up a sweet treat for mom while you do your grocery shopping. As far as flowers go, we offer a variety of bouquets from local flower farmers, or you could check out the selection available from local florists.
Cocktail or Mimosa Kit
If you're looking to shop local for Mother's Day, check in with your favorite bar or restaurant to see if they are offering anything to-go. If you live in the Skagit Valley or Bellingham area, there are quite a few places offering food and drinks to-go. Or! If you want to go the DIY route, you can easily put together a kit, so she can craft her favorite cocktail. Here are a few ideas for making a personalized cocktail kit that your mom will appreciate.
Gifts For Moms Who Live Far Away
If your mom lives far away, dropping something off on her porch might not be feasible. Luckily there are a bunch of different mail-in ideas that will make for the perfect gift.
Handmade Gift From a Local Maker
Keep your Mother's Day gift local by purchasing something special from a local Skagit Valley maker. We do have flowers, wellness items, as well as some gifts and cards on our first floor, but with the temporary closure of our 2nd Floor Mercantile, the Valley Made Marketplace is a great alternative to find handcrafted items for mom.
Valley Made is usually a lively market featuring local makers right here in Downtown Mount Vernon, but because the market isn't an option right now, they've created an online marketplace where you can shop!
Along with the Valley Made Market, here are a few other Skagit Valley makers to check out for a memorable Mother's Day gift:
Hoag Road Maker Co -- jewelry, prints, & apparel
Bow Hill Blueberries -- local blueberry gift sets
Tori Tornado Creative -- stickers, prints, & cards
Dry Dock Goods -- houseplants & handmade gifts
Island Thyme -- handmade soap & skin care
elSage Degisns -- apparel, hat, art, stickers & more
Play a Game With Her via Zoom
3 months ago, the average person probably didn't know what Zoom was.But nowadays, everyone, including mom, knows what Zoom is. And while a nice chat or happy hour glass of wine over Zoom is nice, what about getting the whole family together and playing a game or two? Some games that are easy to play via video conferencing are Pictionary, Charades, Trivia, Drawful, Psych, and Quiplash.
Send Her a House Plant
While a huge bouquet of flowers is definitely a wonderful Mother's Day gift, a houseplant is another option that will last much longer. We have a variety of houseplants at the Co-op that you could package up and ship or drop off on a porch.
Another option is to order a plant online and have it delivered to her door. Dry Dock Goods, a plant and handmade gift shop based in Anacortes, WA is currently shipping their house plants and gifts.
Gifts For The Mom in Your House
If you live with a mom, or you're staying home together, there are lots of ways to celebrate Mother's Day without leaving the house.
Mother's Day Brunch
You can still do a Mother's Day brunch, and this year you won't have to make a reservation or wait in line! One option that's fun is to set up a pancake charcuterie, especially if you're home with a big family. We recently put together a blog post with ideas for creating your own Instagram-worthy charcuterie at home!
At-Home Spa Day
What your mom probably wants most on Mother's Day is to spend time with her kids and do a little R&R. Setting up an at-home spa day for your mom is a great way to do both!
An at-home spa day can be as easy as making her a homemade face mask and setting up a nice relaxing area to sit and enjoy the day.
We recently published an at-home spa day blog post that can serve as inspiration for Mother's Day!
Plant a Garden Together
If your mom is more of a "let's spend time outdoors" rather than "pamper me with a spa day" type, consider tending to the garden with her! If she hasn't started a garden yet this year, pick up some plant starts and soil from the Co-op and spend the afternoon digging in the dirt. It's a fun activity that will continue to grow and blossom long after Mother's Day is over.
Make Candles
Candle-making is a great stay-at-home activity! It's fairly cheap, and the project can be easily customized based on whatever setup you're able to create at home.
Here are a few ideas for how to make candles at home:
How to Make Homemade Candles for Beginners from The Spruce Crafts
How to Make Scented Candles From Scratch from Food52

Do an At-Home DIY Sip and Paint
If you've got YouTube, some painting supplies, and a bottle or two of wine, you can put together your own Mother's Day sip and paint!
Here are a few painting tutorials that would be perfect for mom:
This project could also be done via Zoom, just screen share the YouTube tutorial.
