What’s Fresh from the Garden Center
We’ve got great starts in every direction in stock right now in our Garden Center, and our Red Tag Sale continues throughout the month of June with Sunseed Farm‘s tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and tomatillos on sale.
Sunseed has a whole range of organic pepper starts, from sweet to spicy, mini to mondo, hungarian yellow to purple bell -
And might this be your year to try growing tomatillos?
Tomatillos are a good source of vitamin C and anti-oxidants,and are more mineral rich than tomatoes. They taste a little bit like lemons. They are ready to harvest once the berry has filled its husk. Discard the husk, rinse the berries, and you can eat them raw (tasty!),but cooking will soften them and deepen their flavor. They can be frozen,or stored in a paper bag in your fridge for up to two weeks. They respond great to roasting, and add that secret ingredient to salsas, guacamole, soups, moles, chicken and shrimp dishes. We’ve been collecting some ideas for you, including this link to a recipe for tomatillo salsa that you can use to make these Sweet Potato,Black Bean, and Green Chile Enchiladas
Inside the Co-op we’ve got locally grown bunches of peonies and iris to add some color to your kitchen table.
And don’t forget our upstairs section of the Garden center in our mercantile Loft –gloves, tools, natural slug repellants –you’ll be surprised by what we’ve got up there to decorate and support your gardens.
Carry on !
