In 2008 the Co-op made the decision to stop carrying the few products on our shelves which contained High Fructose Corn Syrup. We believe this decision supports our product buying guidelines, which state that:
Products on the shelves at the Skagit Valley Food Co-op must meet four out of the five following criteria:
- No harmful preservatives
- No artifical flavors
- No artificial colors
- No refined sugars
- Quality at the lowest possible price
The four-out-of-five criteria is also called the “Ben and Jerry’s Clause”, which allows us to make choices that meet the demands of our customers as well as upholding our standards of product integrity. We believe in the bonds of trust between producers and consumers, and our integrity is important to us. For this reason, we have posted information about GMO foods, Nanoproducts, BPAs and Phthalates, Cloning, and Food Irradiation in our Food and Health Blog.
We strive to be a community resource of information and tools for shoppers to make good choices. We are exceptional supporters of organics, local sourced food, and the movement to label GMO’s. We love artisan foods, too, and are proud of our selection of handmade breads, cheeses, wines, chocolates, olives, and other traditionally made foods from the Northwest and around the world!
