We tend to ignore the Granny Smith Apple because it is so “common”. Generally available year-round,grown by many, many orchards, and usually one of the least expensive apple varieties on any given day,it is ubiquitous for a good reason –it’s great apple! Green skin, tart, crisp white flesh,it resists browning when cut making it one of the best apples for fresh use –use them for Waldorf &fruit salads, sliced on a cheese board, and brown bag lunches. Granny Smiths are also great baking apples, holding their shape when cooked. This is a classic apple for Spiced Baked Apples,Pie,Tarts, and Applesauce. I like to toss an apple into the juicer with carrots and a chunk of fresh ginger root, and Granny Smiths provide the right amount of tart to balance the sweet of the carrots. Why are we talking about Granny Smith Apples in the middle of winter? Because the remainder of last fall’s Certified Organic Washington crop has just come out of cold storage and are being sold at a super-low price:49¢ lb! or $16.99 for a 35 lb box. These are good quality apples, still crisp, firm, and flavorful. Time for pie,I say!
Organic Washington Pears are coming out of cold storage, too. Three varieties available in the store today:D’Anjou,Red D’Anjou, and Bosc Pears, all available for $1.19-1.69 lb. Brownfield Orchard as delivered the last of their storage apples:Organic Fuji,Organic Pink Ladies,Organic Braeburn, and Organic Gala Apples are on sale For $1.49-2.29 lb. We expect to sell out in the next week or two.
Winter Citrus is still going strong with over a dozen varieties of oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits available on any given day. Texas grown Organic Rio Star Grapefruits are just about finished up for the season and we will be transitioning to Californa grown Ruby Star Grapefruits soon. Organic Honeygold Grapefruits are in good supply, although the season is always short on these sweet yellow fruits. All grapefruits are selling for $1.29 lb this week. You can also pick up a 5 lb bag of Organic Rio Star Grapefruit for $5.69.
Produce Manager Ben got tired of the soft, wrinkled Green Bell Peppers that we’ve been getting at a super cheap price for the last couple weeks and will be switching to much better quality Organic Green Peppers, but it shows in the price –$4.69 lb. Organic Red Bell Peppers are $2.69 lb,Organic Yellow and Orange Peppers are $3.49 lb:all three are small, but firm, sweet, and very good quality. Organic Juice Carrots from local grower Hedlin Farm are still coming in crisp and super sweet, although prices are running higher. Expect to pay around $10 for a 10 pound bag.
