PDQ Farms is located in Zillah,Washington, about 20 miles east of Yakima off Interstate 82. We have a one-acre orchard of 200 cherry trees,Bings and Rainiers, which we planted in 1997. Knowing that many people have reservations about the use of agricultural chemicals,we have chosen to farm organically. Another factor in that decision was the distance between our orchard and our house, which is about 200 feet. The arrival of our first daughter in 1998 gave us further reason to go organic;we will sell nothing that we would not give to our girls. We have two daughters,Claire and Lily. Claire’s job during harvest is to help with preparations and her sister, and Lily’s job is to eat cherries, which they both love. They also both enjoy chasing cherry-eating birds out of the orchard by running up and down the rows and shouting.
Stuart has worked professionally in fruit growing for over 25 years and likes the independence of having his own orchard. Sandra is an RN and enjoys everything she’s learning about farming. We intentionally planted a small orchard with trees that will not become enormous so that we can do much of the work ourselves, although we have a faithful crew that comes every year to help us harvest. In order to deliver the freshest, best quality product possible,we cool the fruit quickly with minimal handling and deliver promptly. We are very pleased to have our own on-site walk-in refrigerator for this purpose. Our aim is to provide delicious cherries almost as fresh as if they were picked in your own yard.
