Organic Dragon’s Tongue Beans
High summer beans are on! Almost all of our local farms are picking Organic Green Beans right now,as well as,Yellow Beans,Purple Beans, and speckled Dragon Beans. If you didn’t grown your own this year,this is the perfect time to buy some and make your own Dilly Beans or Spicy Pickled Beans. A simple light blanching gets them ready for the freezer. Jill the Cuisine Queen reports having been served some green beans this weekend that were “amazingly fantastic”–blanched,then marinated in fresh lime juice and salt,then grilled over a hot fire. Sounds good,right? Especially if you’ve warmed up your taste buds with a Basil Margarita!
Washington Cherries will be around for just a few more days,but are swiftly being replaced with Washington Melons. Organic Watermelons are only 69¢ lb,while Organic Cantaloupe are 79¢ lb. One of my favorite summer dishes is a simple melon salad:cubed melon with shredded mint leaves and a generous squeeze of fresh lime. Using fresh basil instead of mint leaves is a delicious alternative version,too. This is dish is so refreshing in the late afternoon or evening,when it’s just too hot to cook. Great for tapas,as well!
J-4 Ranch will have Organic Raspberries available for a few more days. We hope to see some Fall Raspberries in another month. Garden Treasures and Viva Farms are bringing in Ever Bearing Strawberries. Brownfield Orchard is going strong with Organic Peaches and Nectarines. Soon they will be picking early-ripening Organic Gingergold Apples!
Hedlin Farm and Skagit Flats Farm are offering up a lovely array of fresh Organic Cucumbers. The quality of these locally grown cukes beats the knickers off the mushy slicers we were getting from California last week. Choose from curling English Cucumbers,thin-skinned Salad Cukes,and hearty Slicers –$2.99 lb. None of our farmers have pickling cucumbers ready yet. We hope to see some in a week or two,along with fresh dill.
